Glue Suncatchers

Sun-catchers and stained glass are a beautiful part of art education that sometimes gets overlooked. We've seen tissue paper stained glass. We've seen pictures from glue. Let's combine them into something magical! In my Discover Art camp I wanted to experiment with glue and liquid watercolor. I loved the results and would love to try this with glitter glue as well. Another day...

Materials:
+ plastic lid
+ white glue
+ liquid watercolor
+ scrap paper
+ pipettes
+ toothpicks
+ suction-cup hanger

1. Pour a generous amount of glue into a clean plastic lid. Here I used Noosa yogurt lids.
2. Tilt the lid to spread the glue evenly.
3. Using pipettes or toothpicks drop some dots of color on top of the glue.
4. Use the toothpicks to mix and blend the watercolor- the yellow here is actually gold.
5. Set aside to dry for several days. You can see how I left them for a day or two to set before moving them again.

Here is a small gallery of some of the finished products! The watercolors mix and diffuse in unexpected ways and the metallic watercolors sit on top.

My first group of students had the chance to cut the edges off and I took that option away for the second group. I poked a hole through a bubble in the glue to hang on the window. This project is very easy but it's also such a test of patience! It took about three days to dry the first time around and four the second. The longest three and four days of these tiny humans' lives! Humidity will do that to you! Happy making.
