Seagull Collage

Back at it again with the collage. I know, it’s been a lot, but I’m telling you- this point in the year is the best to pull out so many cutting and gluing skill projects. I developed this last year when I was in need of something fresh and unique for the Ocean unit. I thought this was a hoot and so the kid stays in the picture. Let’s go!

MATERIALS:
+ white paper painted blue (we would watercolor our backgrounds)
+ half sheet of white paper
+ grey, orange, and yellow crayons
+ sharpie
+ brown and yellow scrap paper
+ glue
+ scissors

Let’s make that seagull. Follow the photos, step by step, to create the body of our seagull. Trace (with sharpie) and erase. Add in those beautiful small details like feathers, beak lines, and eyeball. Color that beak and body in with your crayons! We’ve even used pencil for some shiny grey shimmer.

Now it’s time to give our seagull a place to stand: pilings. These are wood, stone, or concrete columns used to support buildings, docks, walls, or other structures. We’re imagining that ours are nestled safely in or near water. To create a piling, I draw an ellipse at the top of a rectangle of brown paper. Then I drew two long legs from that ellipse. Cut out the outside lines, flip it over, and use your sharpie to create your wood detail.

Make three, four, or five pilings and glue them at the bottom of your blue paper.

To make the seagull legs draw two long legs and two webbed feet on your yellow scrap of paper. Give it some knobby knees for authenticity!

Glue those little legs onto the pilings! Add your body so that it’s not floating above but touching the legs and you’ll have one spectacular seagull staring back at you. What do you think? Pretty silly, huh?

Below are some galleries of finished seagulls from last years’ tiny humans. They did such a great job with each part. It took us two hour long classes to finish these at school. I suspect it should take less than an hour if you’re working by yourself at home. Happy making ocean explorers!
